Recombinant enzymes in in vitro diagnostics (IVD) refer to proteins with enzymatic activity that are produced via genetic engineering techniques. They often use host organisms like yeast, to generate enzymes with specific properties tailored for use in diagnostic assays and tests.  These enzymes play a crucial role in IVD by enhancing the accuracy, sensitivity, and reliability of diagnostic tests, contributing to better patient care through early and precise disease detection and monitoring.

Blocking Buffers

Blocking buffers are inert solutions of a single protein or a combination of proteins, essential in immunoassays, particularly in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) and other antibody-based tests. Their primary purpose is to prevent non-specific binding of antibodies and other proteins to the surface of the assay wells or other solid-phase materials. This non-specific binding can generate background noise and lead to inaccurate results, reducing the assay’s sensitivity and specificity.


What is precision fermentation technology?

Precision fermentation is a technology combining classic fermentation techniques traditionally used to make beer or bread, with the latest strain engineering tools. All of this makes possible the production of very specific ingredients (such as proteins, fats or natural colors), enabling the acquisition of novel functionalities by the final products where these ingredients are incorporated. 

One of the main advantages of precision fermentation is the possibility of producing animal-sourced proteins without the need of the animal itself: thanks to different molecular tools, yeast cells can produce the same protein structure. This enables the use of yeast cells as tiny protein factories using a fraction of the resources needed to produce the same protein in an animal. This environmental impact reduction, together with the reduction of potential zoonotic diseases, count as one of the main advantages of the technology.
